The No Facebook experiment

Posted on March 24th, 2013 @ 18:34 in Uncategorized

So I’ve had the opportunity to temporarily disable my Facebook account and finally try if it is possible (for me!) to live without it. One of the not-very-serious hopes had been that I’d blog more. Ha ha ha. Anyway, here are some impressions/conclusions.

  1. I did about a dozen double takes a day on my phone (I also deleted the app), where “check Facebook” is one of my automatic reflexes (along with Twitter and, currently, Sims Free Play and Flutter (damn you Alisdair!)). However, I didn’t have any cravings (if you can call it that). Once I remembered that it wasn’t there, I didn’t much care.
  2. On the PC I missed it even less, which is kinda insane cuz I was on there all the bloody time. Coming back felt not dissimilar to “no Internet” phases I’ve had previously where you come back and think “well, actually, nothing earth-shattering has happened in my absence”.
  3. Tho, funnily, when I pictured the inaccessible Facebook in my head over the first few days, I saw it as a kind of… hard to describe, like an all white (with some blue) playground with people’s statuses and pictures dancing and jumping around… it was all very active and wheee! and woooo! But ultimately of no relevance whatsoever. :))
  4. I saw all of one link (on Twitter, heh) that I couldn’t access. No other inconveniences (my Spotify account, thankfully, is not linked to FB). Four people contacted me by other means and asked about my absence.
  5. Loads of people have no other way of contacting me though – this is of course the biggest annoyance, but also part of the problem. How can we put our only method of communication in the hands of one for profit corporation!? *grrr* If I were to permanently shut down my account I’d have to give people my email address. Which will then get tons more spam cuz people are idiots and get hacked and send rubbish to their whole address book. 😐

So for now I’m back… I think I’ve decided the advantages still outweigh the inconveniences, which includes privacy concerns etc. I will try not to be on it so damn much tho. Instead I will waste my time on Metafilter and OKCupid. =))

Did you find people made more of an effort to contact you when you came off it? How long were you away from it for?

Only a week, and no, not really. I mean, IMPORTANT people I have on Twitter anyway. Some “real life” (Brighton) people who only have FB or my mobile texted me (only one was ONLY interested in my whereabouts tho, two had unrelated questions and were “uh” when they couldn’t find me on FB lol).

She looks a bit like you actually. πŸ˜• But yeah, she’s pretty cool. Oh, and she plays with Brian Viglione, Amanda Palmer’s former bandmate… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiaSU92huuU
