JK Rowling outs Dumbledore as gay

BBC story

Now!? Seems…. weird and… late and… weird. If I believe her that in her mind he has always been gay (and she’s not just made this up ‘posthumously’ as an – admittedly very clever – marketing gag) then why didn’t she tell us? Why wasn’t it part of the plot?

No doubt some people will now reread the whole series in light of this “new revelation” and maybe even find clues (I’m tempted to at least read the Grindelwald passages again), but I don’t know…. I’m with gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell:

But I am disappointed that she did not make Dumbledore’s sexuality explicit in the Harry Potter book. Making it obvious would have sent a much more powerful message of understanding and acceptance.

This all seems rather lame. Isn’t she mainly serving her own cause? But maybe I am too  jaded lol. YAY FAGS!

I agree with you. But I also think that even if it IS something she came up with after having written the books, it is something very good and might help gay young ones. I prefer her making this up afterwards than her not making it up at all.

That’s the thing tho, I don’t quite see how anyone in the closet might feel more encouraged to come out because apparently the great Dumbledore was gay.

And homophobes won’t change their minds because of this either.
They most probably would not have bought the books if they’d known this earlier tho. 😐

And in a year’s time everyone will have forgotten about this anyway (whereas if it had been in the books that would be much harder!)

No, I dont think this will make anyone come out of the closet, I dont think any one single small thing can change homophobic’s opinions about homosexuality. What I do think though is that small things like these will plant seeds, and if one by one did their little bit by showing its actually ok, then it’ll become more and more “normal” and eventually we’ll get there. Small steps together make big steps.

Like our lovely Michael said – if you hear a lie often enough you begin to believe it. (tho its not a lie in this case, but it works the same)
