I almost burned the house down!

Today I learned that oil is not supposed to smoke when you deep fry something. =))

Yeah so I came across Manjula again and currently her featured recipe is Puri, Indian Puffed Flat Bread. This looked cool (it pops up!) so I decided to give it a try. Had to go into town first to buy a rolling pin and whole wheat flour etc. Got the dough wrong first, whinged to Alisdair, tried again.

Then I did the deep-frying bit. They DID pop! I was amazed! But it also smoked a lot. And set off the fire alarm. =)) So Rita came up and asked what was going on and I explained and she taught me that if oil smokes it is very bad, it can burst into flames any time, and that it was still dangerous (I’d obviously taken the pan off the hob at this point). She made me put it outside (on the roof ledge) and put the fire blanket over it (you may remember she made us buy these after John set fire to his rubbish bin). Yeah and then we had to go downstairs to figure out how to shut up the fucking alarm. :))

Of course by now I wanted nothing to do with deep-frying anymore (I have actually done it before, dunno why it was an issue this time), but Rita was all like “oh FFS you need to learn, let’s try again” so we did, but because I was too scared to put the heat too far up the rest of the puri didn’t pop. :)) They were still nice tho.

I actually have the whole thing up to the fire alarm on video cuz I was gonna turn it into a “Clarissa’s shit cooking skills” video, but I am hesitant to put it on Youtube cuz it will demonstrate the shocking extent of my cluelessness. =)) Rita has volunteered to come and assist me should I want to make further scary cooking attempts. :)) She’s pretty cool at the end of the day, hehe.
