Myers-Briggs II

Posted on September 22nd, 2007 @ 23:46 in Uncategorized

This was quite interesting just now… in a way. So we did this Myers-Briggs thing at work on Thursday (just to put it in context for those who didn’t bother reading the previous entry) and I found it very useful to understand people more. I like labels.

I spoke to my completely useless whore of a slutbag last night and she said sth like “yeah but do you really think anyone else in your team cared about any results other than their own?” (excluding Alex, since he and I read up on the rest of the team together *lol*) and that really this wasn’t gonna be of any use with respect to understanding where other people come from etc. And I still kinda maintain(ed) that if a big profit-oriented corporation like Amex (hmmmm, capitalism =P~ ) uses these things then it must be of some use. But my slore argued that it was akin to any “team-building exercise”, on the same level as going bowling together (we’ve got this coming up too *lol* – hopefully I’ll be in Lux then )

So tonight Jana (work person, she’s the one I go to see all my flats with etc) texted me that she and Antje (both ‘extroverts’) were out somewhere and did I want to join them, it was a really nice pub and there was gonna be live music in a moment too. I said no (I did consider it, but it was too far away, it was too late, if there was gonna be live music we couldn’t even talk – what was the point?) and she replied “Like I said to Mandy (an ‘introvert’ like me): you are such wimps! Still, enjoy your evening!”

She didn’t mean it entirely seriously, but it totally illustrates the difference between us, and has just made me realise how oh so disturbingly accurate that stupid categorisation seems to be. As I said, I’d done the test before, just never had an introduction to and thorough explanation of it. And what wifey-who-held-the-workshop said was that you can do both ‘sides’, but one will come more naturally and will be where you get your energy, whereas the other one costs  you a lot of energy.

And that’s so very much what it felt like tonight. I like both Antje and Jana a lot, and I do like to spend time with them – but a loud pub on a Saturday night is not where I want to do this. It costs me effort. So I weighed the pros and cons. Had they just been down the road I would’ve gone for their sake (tho the live music would’ve put me off anyway). But catching a bus or cab to go somewhere that gives me nothing just wasn’t worth it.

Whereas an extrovert would’ve gladly put up with the expense (cab) or exasperation (bus) to go out there because ultimately the whole experience would’ve energized  them. I now also understand Alex more who regularly whinges at work when he’s tired and hungover because “someone called him at 11.30pm and told him to make his way to Club X” – he can’t say no because this is what fuels him, even if the next day he feels awful.

Fascinating. Anyway I guess my point originally was that Jana & Antje hadn’t “got us introverts” – but in the meantime she’s texted “ok I get your point” so I guess I could just delete this whole entry? But I won’t. Instead I’ll say I love my friends. 😑 πŸ™‚

Do those tests show only if you are an introvert or extrovert πŸ˜• Isn’t it more or less obvious without tests? They could just ask “are you an introvert or an extrovert?”lol. How unfair tho 😐 introverts have to make efforts to be extroverted, otherwise they are frowned upon, and extroverts are naturally perceived as a norm.

No, they give you a complete profile. The different types
Introvert – Extrovert
Sensing – iNtuitive
Thinking – Feeling
Judging – Perceiving
are more or less obvious to yourself (tho I’m still not 100% convinced I’m intuitive rather than sensing).
But the combination of the 4 gives you a profile that can result in some interesting insights that aren’t necessarily obvious at first. Of course a “that is so me!” doesn’t really help you, because you already knew that, too.*lol* But I found it particularly interesting to find it out about others.

There are tests online too btw, here for instance.

And yeah it sucks that extroverts “have it easy” – tho wifey-who-did-the-workshop stressed that “there is no good or bad” in any of the types, and that there are things that are easier for introverts too. (er… lol)

I took this test once too. I think I’m the same as Mon as far as I remember.
Quite interesting…when we took it a lot of ppl THOUGHT they were a certain way when they actually weren’t.

“that there are things that are easier for introverts too. (er… lol)”

lol – I’d like to know what those things are :))

Mon, J means you should have had my Xmas present finished on time :wh

I think as far as I remember things that are easier for introverts are, like, sitting still and taking things in. And thinking things over without having to discuss them with 100 people (now that would make me an extrovert, lol).

I think I might change the text in this input box to white. πŸ˜•

I do not appreciate being called a useless whore of a slutbag.

And I still don’t get quite whose point this proves – yours, for they basically alluded to your “wimpishness” which they could have got from the questionnaire (although I think they prob ALREADY knew that about you and it had little to do with the test) or mine, as they basically invited you out even tho they should have known (had they remembered the test) that you wouldn’t like it.

I’ve read now, and I think I too have done this test before. It sounds very familiar lol.

(And I agree with J.)
