Why writing is like running

Speak for yourself, you may say at this point. Okay, I am! This is how writing has been like running for me, or more specifically, how NaNoWriMo has been like Couch25K.

  1. Start with the attitude: gonna give this another go. Have failed previously, but who knows what happens this time. Might work, might not. No pressure.
  2. Look up after day 3 or 4, surprised. Hey, this is actually fun! Let’s keep up this momentum. Yeah!
  3. Keep chugging along. The growing confidence from the good days helps through the bad days. Wow, 20 minutes running / 20k words already!
  4. Get cocky and think “Ha, I am the Queen, nothing can stop me now.”
  5. Hit a wall exactly one day later. Curse yourself and the world. Why does this have to be so hard?! Maybe I’ll give up.
  6. Power through anyway. THIS IS THE NEW AND BETTER ME!
  7. Unbelievably, reach the end of the progam. Realise you are proud of your achievement.
  8. Run a marathon (done) / add another 50k to your novel and self-publish (maybe?).
