Anecdote - da powercut!
Thu, Nov 17 2005 @ 03:33   //   Category: Life & Me   //   5 comments

Not gonna get any sleep tonight anyway so might as well keep going.

Yeah cuz we had a powercut today. This isn't really very fun, in fact it was incredibly annoying since I had to pack and do all sorts of stuff, but I guess it makes for a fun story, ish. For anyone not involved.

I was online when it happened (of course, where else?!). First I assumed one of my own fuses had gone again, same as the other day, but turned out it was a bit more serious, as by the time I'd found my torch I could hear people in the stairs going "yeah mine's dead too, oh yeah you too?" etc.

So I decided to venture out (had to change out of my pyjama trousers first, but found out later I wasn't the only one lol) and join the discussion with the rest of them. I took my mobile so I could text Katja "wah, powercut!!" lol.

We were all huddled around the new fusebox on the ground floor, everyone with their keys and their mobile.... it was really quite weird, I have to admit I had not consciously seen any of these people before! :)) (tho no doubt I musta bumped into them countless times... ahem) They're all nice people tho! :P One of us managed to get hold of the landlord and he said he'd send the electrician and he'd be 15mins... so we all disappeared into our ratholes, I mean our flats, again.

Now I am a very very very sad being. First thing I did was boot up my laptop & hang it out the window trying to detect any WLANs I could log into. :)) And I did actually find two unprotected ones, one of which was strong enough for me to log onto Yahoo. I was cold (the window was open). I was uncomfortable (I had to stand, leaning forward out the window). Time was limited (my battery sucks). It did not last long, but it was fun and worthy of my geekiness. :))

Ok so with that finished there was no way around the packing, so I lit some candles & tealights and started on the task. Then I heard sounds in the hallway and decided to go have a look. Electrician guy finally arrived, checked stuff, said he'd call Seaboard, he'd get back to us... yada yada blabla.

Some of us ended up sitting around chatting for a while on the second floor. Mainly me and Fee (I believe this is her name - the one who organised that "meet your housemates" thing I didn't go to)... it's really sad innit, that it has to come to this to get to know your housemates? Yes it is, but I am being positive, so let me rephrase this: it's really great that this unfortunate incident allowed me to get to know some of my housemates.

Fee (if that is her name) is actually really quite cute & interesting. The other chat-person was Maria... turns out she works for Amex (heh) so obviously things turned to "oh so do I know you, I work for their helpdesk" and we came to the conclusion that I very probably do know her - she's one of the people who always fuck up their passwords but they're sure they don't do anything wrong (lol we had a semi-joking-but-not-really argument about that).

I sure will pay attention to any Spanish Marias from Amex House in the future. Hah, it's hilarious/typical tho that I have probably spoken to my neighbour quite a few times without having the slightless clue. Fee, the fun one, used to work for Amex too (earlier this year, when I was already at IBM). No idea if I will ever speak to her again, I kinda want to, kinda think "whatever"... will have to see.

Anyway, Seaboard guys turned up eventually and fixed it. (in the meantime I called lots of people, incl nan, hence previous entry). Depending on electricity sucks. But now I know my housemates. :))

"And I did actually find two unprotected ones, one of which was strong enough for me to log onto Yahoo."

LOL @ incident. So you got out of flat and met people then! ;)

And yeah I HAAAATED getting calls from people whose er, passwords, er accidently fucked up themselves. (That's before helpdesk opened and calls were directed to me). Strong hate.
