My old landline phone makes the cutest little noise when you leave the handset off the hook for too long. It sounds like a fire alarm that 's too scared to disturb anyone so it just makes this barely audible timid little squeal. wee-wee-wee. It's incredibly endearing. 
(I've had this phone for 7 years. I don't leave it off the hook very often. I should.)
